Oyo state government owns Ibadan kidnappers den?A must read!

Ayodele Adigun, a former secretary to the state government, said the property was an abandoned government-run camp for the mentally challenged.

Writing in the Guardian Newspaper, Mr. Adigun alleged that the premises discovered last March was an abandoned sewage treatment plant converted to a camp for lunatics abducted from the streets of Ibadan by the Oyo State government  as part of a campaign to beautify Ibadan.

The news of the discovery of the alleged kidnappers den and its horrid condition filled the sensibilities of Nigerians with horror.

Over 20 decomposing corpses and horribly emaciated people, some in the throes of death, were found at the den when a group of commercial cyclists allegedly searching for a missing colleague stormed the premises.

Some of the inmates, who claimed to have been fed just once a week, said they were abducted by unknown persons and brought to the compound. It was alleged that their abductors kept them and sold their body parts for fetish purposes.

However, Mr. Adigun, also a former Commissioner for Special Duties in the state, said the tales being spread about the property were nowhere close to the truth.

He traced the history of the facility in Soka to the award of the contract for the channelization of the Ogunpa River.

He explained that the place was converted to a sewage treatment plant after the contractors working on the channelization of the river failed to deliver on the project.

According to him, despite being a source of revenue to the government, the sewage plant was discontinued in 2012 following complaints by residents of the area over the offensive smell oozing out from the plant.

"These facts completely debunk the notion that the place was a ritual den since about ten years ago because a government agency could not have operated a project generating revenue for government where such a nefarious activity was going on," he said.

According to him, the place was converted to a camp for lunatic when the Oyo State government, following the award of a contract to Messrs Kolaful Company Limited to clear Ibadan streets of lunatics.

Mr Adigun alleged that the lunatic abducted from the streets were kept at the Soka premises.

To validate his point, Mr Adigun made reference to a report in the Tribune Newspaper of August 15, 2013 titled 'Oyo Government moves lunatics from Ibadan roads'.

According to the report, a Toyota Hiace commercial bus, with Oyo registration number XF 843 NRK, was seen picking up lunatics from the streets of Ibadan. When accosted by the Tribune reporter, one of the state government officials, Afinju Leke, said they were from an agency under the Ministry of Environment and Habitat, commissioned to rid the road of mentally challenged people.

When contacted the spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment, Cosmas Oni, confirmed that the agency was indeed commissioned by the state government and was initially attached to the ministry, the Tribune reported

"It is true that the agency was commissioned by the state government to do the job. However, it has been moved to the Ministry of Women Affairs, so it's no longer under Environment ministry again," Mr Oni reportedly said.

According to Mr. Adigun, the Oyo State government should be held responsible for the deaths and the condition of the near-dead people rescued at the site.

"The fact is that the agents of government starved most of these unfortunate people to death.  Those who did not die were on the throes of death with emaciated physiques when they were rescued," he said.

"May I confirm that the Ladoja administration did not initiate any programme to move lunatics from the streets, neither was it done by the succeeding administration of Akala.  Oyo State Government should be honest enough to take responsibility for this inhuman, wicked and irresponsible act rather than trying to hide behind a needle.  There is no other word for this act than genocide!   The nefarious acts were committed between 2012 and 2014.

"It might have been possible for ritualists to take advantage of the shoddy arrangement by government but the fact is that government used its resources to gather these unfortunate people to a location where they became vulnerable to human predators and the elements.  I sincerely hope that the police and human rights organisations will get to the root of this evil."

But in its reaction, the Oyo state government said Mr. Adigun, a member of the opposition Accord Party, is "on a junket of lies" to discredit the government.

A spokesperson for the administration, Festus Adedayo, told PREMIUM TIMES that what happened at the property was well-documented by the media and from the reports it is clear that the place was an actual den for kidnappers and ritual killer.

"What his piece succeeded in doing was to make the whole world a liar, especially the crop of energetic and painstaking journalists who make up the Nigerian media who have feasted on the news since it broke," Mr. Adedayo said.

"Virtually all Nigerian and foreign newspapers, including the Mail of London, as well as radio and television houses, have done features, interviews and on-the-spot assessments of the Soka area. Indeed, the resilient men and women of the pen, who churned out news daily from the horror scene, gave graphic accounts from released captives, interviewed the community members and wrote gripping stories of fresh blood spillages, gallows where captives were slaughtered and sundry other revelations from the horror scene.

"The media have shown us pictures of baby wears, shoes, garments, school children's uniforms, identity cards and bank account statements that were found at Soka. We would need Mr. Adigun to tell us that these were his imaginary mad men and women whom he claimed that the government shepherded to the expansive land. Why would anyone play politics this brazenly and unmindful of the souls of the murdered at Soka?"

On the concern raised by some critics that the Oyo government might be attempting to cover up its involvement in the Soka horror after it prematurely ordered the demolition of the structure while investigations were still going on, Mr. Adedayo said the government was acting on the request of the community for the demolition of make-shift structures in the area to allow for better visibility.

The police ordered a stoppage of the demolition, saying it could not be done until investigations into the matter are completed.

BREAKING NEWS: INEC Declares Ondo By-Election Inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the House of Representatives by-election held yesterday at Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency in Ondo State inconclusive.

The difference in declared votes between Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is 1300, while the rejected votes was more than 1800.

This, according to the Returning Officer for the Poll, a Professor from Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Babatunde Adeyemi has violated the electoral law.

Adeyemi explained that the margin of votes between contestants must be more than number of cancelled votes.

Already, INEC has compiled other results for remaining wards for the two local governments.

The results are as follow: ACD 137, APC 9232, DPP 278, LP 23926, PDC 173, PDP 22628 and PPA 81 votes.

However, Adeyemi said INEC will look into the disruption of Arugbo ward two election, which was allegedly hijacked by suspected militants on the waterways.

The returning officer said, it would be wrong for the electoral powerhouse not to allow electorates from Arugbo ward two, who were about 7000 to take part in the election.

DailyPost learnt that the hoodlums allegedly disrupted the election because that ward was a stronghold of the PDP in that Council.

Sport:League table is fake.Says Mourinho

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho played down his side's Premier League title chances despite returning to top spot with a 3-0 home win over Stoke.

The Blues lead Liverpool by a point and Manchester City by two points, although both have played fewer games.
He said: "The situation is the same. The table is again fake. The table is again with lots of matches in hand.
"This, in the best league in the world, I don't think is the best image we are giving. It's not the best situation."
City have two matches in hand on Chelsea, one because weather forced the postponement of their home game against Sunderland, which will now be played on 16 April.
City's match against Aston Villa will not be played until four days before the final day of the season.
"To play matches in hand in the last week of the season, I don't think is adapted to this top football country," Mourinho added.
"You look to the top part of the table and, some teams, they have more matches than others. You look to the relegation area and it's exactly the same."
Goals from Mohamed Salah - making his first Chelsea start since arriving from Swiss side Basle for £11m in January - Frank Lampard and Willian secured a comfortable victory over Stoke at Stamford Bridge.
"The players can go home with smiles on their faces," Mourinho said.
"He [Salah] is improving, step by step. We knew he was a player for the next season and can use this season to improve.
"Next season we have kids like him - Oscar, Eden Hazard, Willian and Andre Schurrle - all of them 20 to 25, all talented and with time to reach the top of the game."
Chelsea host Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Tuesday, aiming to overturn a 3-1 deficit.
"We have to enjoy the match on Tuesday and not to be scared of it, not lose the tie and go out," Mourinho said.
"[To] enjoy it is the best way to play this match because of the difficulty of this situation."

The Lagos state high court has awarded about $300,000 (£180,000) in damages to suspended central bank chief Lamido Sanusi after he filed a harassment case against the government.

The court also ordered that Mr Sanusi be given back his passport, and he should not be detained unlawfully.

He was briefly detained in February, soon after his suspension.

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan suspended him after he claimed that $20bn in oil revenue had gone missing.

Mr Sanusi's passport was seized on 20 February at the international airport in Lagos, Nigeria's main city.

The Lagos High Court restrained the government from arresting, detaining or harassing him, Nigeria's Premium Times newspaper reports.

Mr Jonathan says Mr Sanusi was suspended, pending the outcome of an investigation into "financial recklessness and misconduct" at the central bank.

Nigeria's state oil firm has denied failing to account for the money, saying Mr Sanusi's claim was "unsubstantiated".

Mr Sanusi is widely respected after undertaking reforms to the banking sector since his appointment in 2009.

He was named central bank governor of the year for 2010 by Banker magazine.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the transfer ban handed to the Spanish club by Fifa is an "injustice".

The Catalan club cannot buy players until the summer of 2015 after the world governing body found them guilty of repeatedly breaching transfer regulations in signing youth players.
Barcelona have said they will appeal against the ban.
"We're going to fight because we think this is an injustice," said Bartomeu.
A Fifa investigation - centred on several players aged under 18 who were registered and played for the club between 2009 and 2013 - found that Barcelona and the Spanish Football Federation were guilty of a "serious" infringement of the rules in relation to 10 players.
Fifa rules state that international transfers are only permitted for players over the age of 18 - unless the player in question meets one of three qualifying criteria.
Under-18s can move to a club in a different country if their parents move there for non-footballing reasons, if they are from another nation within the European Union or European Economic Area and aged between 16 and 18, or if they live within 100km of the club.
Bartomeu is adamant no Spanish regulations have been broken in signing young players to their La Masia academy and added that the club will not change their model for recruiting youth players.
"It is not our intention to have to surrender the model of our youth system," he added.
"The Masia system is not to be touched, that is something we want our members and fans to know.
"We will fight against Fifa and this unjust attack on a model we have shown to be a huge success on a global level for over three decades."
Bartomeu said Fifa's investigation into Barcelona came about from "an anonymous complaint" about "an unnamed player", adding that someone was attempting to "tarnish" the club's academy.
"We are still studying certain documents and we will continue doing that until we can say which people, or who, is behind this," added Bartomeu.
"We know we have to fight hard. We have had enough of this basically. Somebody out there is trying to tarnish the good name of our model.
"It is hurting Barcelona. We have to show we have done nothing wrong. We have tried to be as transparent as possible, explain what has happened and let people know the truth and that the accusations are false."
Prior to the ban, Barcelona had been linked with Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen (external) and Dinamo Zagreb attacking midfielder Alen Halilovic.
Bartomeu is confident the club's plans for their squad for next season will not be affected.
"We have no intention of changing our plans at the moment," he said.
"We have a season to get on with and at the right time we will be announcing new signings, who will at least be a goalkeeper and a centre-back."

Bad news for barca fans:Barca banned from signing any players next season

The news threw several ongoing deals into doubt - including the one of 17 year old Alen Halilovic who's been dubbed the "Croatian-Messi". But Bartomeu has now spoken out about the punishment, and told reporters he feels there are people, who are out to hurt Barcelona.

At last , Chinese ship detects signal from missing Malaysian plane

A Chinese ship searching for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane has detected signals from a location in the South Indian Ocean, according to reports.

A black box detector deployed by the vessel Haixun 01 picked up the "pings" at around 25 degrees south latitude and 101 degrees east longitude – just north of the designated search area west of Perth.

The signal had a frequency of 37.5 kilohertz (cycles per second) – the standard for black box flight recorders and one that is chosen because it stands out from other noise.

A reporter with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, who is on-board the Haixun, said the patrol ship first picked up the signal on Friday when it was detected intermittently for about 15 minutes. But other vessels were in the vicinity at the time, raising the possibility that they might have been the source.

But Haixun, China's largest patrol vessel, picked up the signal again on Saturday, when it was detected every second for 90 seconds.

A black box is designed to emit one pulse every second for approximately 30 days.

The area where Haixun may have detected the black box has water depths of 14,000 feet interspersed with undersea mountain ranges of up to 8,200 feet.

Dozens of ships, planes and submarines resumed the search on Saturday, the 28th day since it disappeared, with just days left to find the black box before its battery runs out.

Up to 10 military planes, three civilian jets and 11 ships took part in the protracted search in the southern Indian Ocean for the Boeing 777 which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people onboard.

The 128-metre Haixun patrol ship arrived on Friday at a new search area, north of a 1 million square mile area earlier designated by Australia.

The ship, which can reportedly travel for 10,000 nautical miles without refuelling, is one of two Chinese vessels currently searching for missing plane off the Australian coast.

Military and civilian planes, ships with deep-sea searching equipment and a British nuclear submarine are scouring a remote patch of the southern Indian Ocean off Australia's west coast, in the increasingly urgent hunt for debris and the "black box" recorders that hold vital information about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370′s last hours.

Australian Defence Minister David Johnston urged caution, saying he had not received a report on the signal and warned that it may not be from the plane.

"This is not the first time we have had something that has turned out to be very disappointing," he told ABC television.

"I'm just going to wait for (JACC chief) Angus (Houston) and the team and my team to come forward with something that's positive because this is a very very difficult task."

Relatives of the 153 Chinese passengers of Flight MH370 were still digesting the news on Saturday.

Some said it was too early to discuss the possible find. Others said they were already convinced the "ping" had come from the missing plane's black box even though Chinese authorities have so far insisted that has not been confirmed.

"I just saw the news. Now I feel really sad. Earlier there was still a glimmer of hope," Chen Zesheng, whose cousin was on the plane, told The Telegraph on Saturday night.

Mr Chen, 63, said he had become "lost and disappointed" with the so far "fruitless" search. Saturday night's reports appeared at least to represent progress.

"We still want to know what happened. I hope the search and rescue ships, especially those from China, can carry on with their work, finding the debris of the plane as well as the passengers' belongings [so we have] something to remind us of ours loved-ones."
