Bread seller crushed by car as she fought over Gh¢1

A 20-year-old bread hawker on the streets of Kumasi was crushed to death by a car Thursday morning, as she fought a rival bread seller over Gh¢1.

The deceased, Azumah Ayina, was pushed onto the road by her nemesis, Manuella, 30, as they struggled over the change at a Metro mass transport bus terminal near Abrepo Junction.

The two hawkers, according to XYZ News' Ashanti regional Correspondent, Isaac Bediako Justice, were not on talking terms, prior to the incident.

They locked horns after a male customer, who already had a Gh¢1 change with Manuella from a previous transaction, asked Manuella to give that change to the deceased, after he had bought bread from her Thursday.

An eyewitness told Bediako Justice that the deceased drew first blood by hitting Manuella, who, in anger, pushed Azumah onto the road as a vehicle approached.

Azumah was killed instantly after getting run over by the vehicle.

The body has been deposited at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Manuella has been handed over to the Suame Divisional police command.

Zimbabwe warns foreign firms of January 2014 arrest

The owners of foreign firms operating in certain sectors in Zimbabwe after 1 January 2014 will be arrested, a senior official has warned.
Economic Empowerment Secretary George Magosvongwe issued the warning in parliament, state media reports.
"Indigenisation" of the economy was one of President Robert Mugabe's main campaign themes in the March election, the BBC reports.

Farming, hairdressing and baking are among the sectors now reserved for "indigenous", or black, Zimbabweans.
"1 January is a month to come and we are putting in place measures for enforcement in the event that they do not comply," the state-owned Herald newspaper quotes Magosvongwe as saying.
He said that Zimbabweans were being identified to take over businesses to prevent shortages of goods.

According to the Herald the "reserved sectors of the economy" include: Retail and wholesale business, hairdressers, beauty salons, bakers, employment agencies, agriculture, transport, estate agencies and advertising agencies.

It said that foreign-owned restaurants which did not serve local food would not be affected.
Owners of businesses without indigenisation compliance certificates face a fine or imprisonment if they are still operating, the Herald reports.
It says these certificates are only given to local people.
The BBC's Brian Hungwe in Harare says that there has been growing concern in Zimbabwe over an influx of traders from Nigeria and China who sell all sorts of goods in local markets, undercutting local retailers.
Mr Mugabe says his policies are needed because under colonial rule, many economic sectors were reserved for white people.
His critics say that his seizure of most of the country's white-owned land has ruined what used to be one of Africa's most developed economies.

Cynthia Osokogu's murder: I was tortured to admit killing her – Suspect

The prime suspect in the murder of Cynthia Osokogu, Okwumo Nwbufo, on Wednesday told a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, that the police forced him to admit that he killed the Army General's daughter.

Nwabufo 34, who is standing trial with Olisaeloka Ezike(24), Orji Osita (33) and Ezike Nonso (25), said he was tortured to make statements that is being used against him.

The defendants were charged to court by the state government, after they were alleged to have chained, drugged and strangled the deceased at Cosmilla Hotel, FESTAC Town, Lagos, on July 22, 2012.

Led in evidence by his counsel, Victor Okpara, Nwabufo, who had at the last hearing, told the court that his confessional statements were made under duress, narrated how the police forced him.

At Wednesday's trial within trial to determine how statements were obtained during investigation, Nwabufo said the police who came to arrest him called him a murderer and beat him up.

"On the day I was arrested, up to 20 policemen broke into my apartment and asked for my name after which they called me a murderer and started beating me,

"I was later blindfolded while I was putting on only pant and taken into their vehicle then we drove to the police station," he said.

According to Nwabufo, he asked the police to allow him contact his lawyer or relatives which they refused.

"When we got to the police station, I was taken to the Area Commander, Dan Okoro's office who showed me a lady's picture and asked if I knew her.

"I said yes, she is my friend and he immediately called me a murderer while he pinched the upper part of my left eye with a plier.

"I was then taken to a room where I was chained and tortured to accept whatever they (the police) told us concerning the murder," said Nwabufo.

The defendant explained that it was during this torture that the police brought out a suspect and shot him on the leg to show that they would shoot us if we do not comply.

"One of the policemen released tear-gas into my left eye and have not being able to see with it since then," he said.

He also claimed that it was the torture that led to the statement which was being dictated to him at different times.

ASUU Postpones NEC Meeting Over Iyayi’s Death

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has postponed its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was supposed to hold today, due to the loss of one of the prominent members of the union, Professor Festus Iyayi, who died in an auto crash on Lokoja-Abuja Expressway, on his way to the Kano, yesterday, for the union's meeting.



The decision to call off or continue the four months old strike embarked upon by the University lecturers was expected to be made at the meeting which would have held today but for Iyayi's death.

The union called for the meeting after fresh negotiations with the president, where the government was said to have shown commitment to ending the strike by improving on earlier offers.

The meeting will now hold on date to be communicated to members later.

Eighty people have been publicly executed in cities across North Korea for "minor transgressions" including watching South Korean films and distributing pornography, according to reports.
South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo quotes a source who said the first large-scale public executions under ruler Kim Jong-Un happened last Sunday.
Around 10 people were killed in seven different cities. During one of the execution sessions, eight people were tied to stakes in a local stadium and shot with a machine gun in front of 10,000 people – including children.

The victims of those killings in the city of Wonson, in the country's Kangwon province, were said to have been accused of watching and illegally trafficking South Korean videos, possessing a bible, or being involved in prostitution.
Any accomplices or family members of the accused alleged to have been involved in their crimes were sent on to prison camps.
The executions come three months after it was reported Kim Jong-Un's regime had killed 12 well-known North Korean performers, including the despot's ex-lover Hyon Song-wol.
They are said to have been accused of filming themselves having sex and selling the material.

Groups Ask UN To Investigate Detention Of Mrs Clara Chime

Two civil society groups, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Women Advocate Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) have petitioned Mr. El Hadji Malick SOW, Chair-Rapporteur of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking him "to urgently investigate allegations of arbitrary deprivation of liberty of Mrs Clara Chime, by her husband, Mr Sullivan Chime who is the governor of Enugu State of Nigeria."

The groups requested the Chair-Rapporteur to "issue an urgent appeal to the governor and the Nigerian government to release her from unlawful detention without further delay."

According to the groups, "The continuing restriction and violation of Mrs Chime's rights also constitutes violence against women especially given the physical and psychological suffering she is currently facing."

In the petition dated 8 November 2013 and sent through the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Office, Mrs Navi Pillay, the groups said that, "Mrs Chime is not known to have committed any criminal offence, and the deprivation of her liberty has continued to affect her physically and emotionally, as well as seriously undermine her other internationally recognized human rights. This deprivation and compulsory confinement is not in conformity with international human rights standards, and cannot be justified under any circumstances whatsoever."

"By restricting the movement of Mrs Chime and limiting her right to liberty, we strongly believe that her internationally recognized right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, including the right to medical care in functioning public health and healthcare facilities, is seriously being violated," the groups also stated.

According to the groups, "We believe that the importance given to the "underlying determinants of health", that is, the factors and conditions which protect and promote the right to health of individuals, shows that unless other rights like the right to liberty, freedom of movement and the principle of non-discrimination, the right to health can be compromised."

The petition signed by Adetokunbo Mumuni for SERAP, and Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi for WARDC, also stated that, "The rights to liberty and to health are necessary for a life in dignity. This right is clearly recognized under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the UN International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights both of which Nigeria has ratified. In its 1946 Constitution, the World Health Organization (WHO), defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

According to the groups, "The right to health includes the right to a system of health protection, to prevention, and treatment and access to essential medicines. The "underlying determinants of health" include freedom of movement and liberty, the right to be free from non-consensual medical treatment, and to be free from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."

Five suspected terrorists and two operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) have been killed in raid of terrorists’ hideout in Otoro Quarters in Kano State.

The JTF spokesman, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said that the group stormed the place on Saturday morning and engaged in a shootout that claimed the lives of seven people.

Wao Texas firm makes metal gun with 3-D printer.Check it out

A Texas company says it has made the first metal gun using a 3-D printer, taking the debate over people's emerging ability to create their own firearms to a new level.

Solid Concepts, a specialty manufacturing company, said in a blog post it has fired more than 50 rounds from the handgun, even hitting a few bull's-eyes at more than 30 yards.

The pistol is a version of an M1911, a handgun designed by John Browning and first used widely in the latter stages of combat stemming from the Philippine-American War. It's built from 33 mostly stainless-steel parts and has a carbon-fiber handgrip carved with a laser.

"The 3-D-printed metal gun proves that 3-D printing isn't just making trinkets and Yoda heads," the company said in the blog post.

Solid Concepts went out of its way Friday to point out that producing the metal gun isn't meant to advance a trend that worries law enforcement and some politicians. As 3-D printers become more widespread and affordable, some envision a near future in which criminals can crank out untraceable weapons without having to leave their homes.

"Let me start out by saying one, very important thing: This is not about desktop 3-D printers," Alyssa Parkinson, a spokeswoman for the company, wrote in the blog post.

The metal gun wasn't a move toward making firearms with a 3-D printer cheaper or more accessible, she wrote.

Basic 3-D printers, such as the MakerBot Replicator 2, can be bought for around $2,000. But Solid Concepts used a specialized, high-end printer whose cost would be out of reach of most people.

"The industrial printer we used costs more than my college tuition (and I went to a private university)," Parkinson said. "And the engineers who run our machines are top of the line; they are experts who know what they're doing and understand 3-D printing better than anyone in this business."

Solid Concepts wanted to show that 3-D printing is more than just hobbyists churning out plastic doodads -- it's a viable option for serious commercial use.

News: Explosions kills 1,injured 8 in North china city

a Communist Party building in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring another eight, state media said.

The official Xinhua news agency said what appeared to be small-scale bombs went off outside an office building of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party. Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi province.

"Judging from the scattering of small metal balls, it is suspected that improvised bombs exploded," the news agency said.

There was no immediate explanation for the attack. But such incidents are not uncommon in China and underscore the government's worries about stability in the world's second-largest economy, with a widening gap between rich and poor and growing anger at corruption and environmental issues.

Photos circulated on Chinese social media sites showed smoke filling the wide avenue where the party office is located and vehicles with blown out windows. Emergency trucks were parked outside what appeared to be undamaged buildings.

Xinhua cited residents as saying people in the area scattered after as many as seven blasts went off.

The microblog of the official People's Daily newspaper said one person had been killed and another eight were injured, including one person with serious injuries.

The Chinese government blamed Islamists for an attack in central Beijing last week when a car ploughed through bystanders on the edge of Tiananmen Square and burst into flames, killing three people in the car and two bystanders.

The incidents come as China ramps up security before top leaders gather on Saturday for a plenum meeting in Beijing to discuss key reforms.

In 2011, a farmer bombed three government buildings in Fuzhou city in Jiangxi province after failing to get redress over seizure of his land. Two people and the farmer were killed.

A 42-year-old farmer with terminal lung cancer detonated a home-made device aboard a bus in Fujian province in 2005, injuring 31 and killing himself, possibly to protest prohibitive healthcare costs.

Good News from the 13hours Meeting between Mr President and ASUU!

Government suggest that resolution may be in sight for the ongoing industrial action embarked on by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria.

Rising from a meeting between the President and the leadership of ASUU, the Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu who spoke to Channels Television State House Correspondent on behalf of the Federal Government said that considerable progress has been made and that Nigerians should expect a positive reaction from the striking lecturers.

The meeting which lasted 13 hours raised hopes among Nigerians, and there were expectations that the President stepping in personally would yield an immediate result, but ASUU President, Nasir Fagge insisted that it was too soon for the union to make any statement until members are briefed on the meeting.

"We now have a message from Mr. President that we are going to take to our members, and we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to the message of Mr. President."

When asked about the possibility of going back to the classrooms, Mr. Faggie said "that is up to our members."

It will be recalled that the legislative arm of the government had stepped into the 4 month old ASUU crisis by appealing to the lectures to embrace a dialogue with the government towards finding a "win-win" resolution to it.

Senate President, David Mark remarked that "national interest is at stake as students have been out of classrooms for about 4 months now and that is not in the interest of anybody. We are not happy, the parents are not happy and the Government is not happy…it's only proper that we have it resolved as quickly as possible."

35-year-old man arraigned in Osun over alleged possession of live snake, fake $237,700

A 35-year-old, Aliyu Mutairu, was on Tuesday charged with illegal possession of a live snake, charms and fake 237, 700 dollars at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates' Court.

The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of felony, possession of criminal charms and fake currency.

The prosecutor, DSP Promise Akanwa told the court that the accused was caught with the items on Oct. 22 at 5.00 p.m. at Mobarajo Village, Ifewara near Ilesa in Osun.

According to him, Mutairu also had in his possession a box containing a live snake, black soap, white clothes, one black pot and two live ducks among others.


"In addition, 2,377 pieces of 100 dollar bills suspected to be fake with the same serial numbers were found on the accused which he intends to inject into the country's economy.''

Akanwa said the offences contravened Sections 160 (a), 213 (b) and 430 (1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

Counsel to Mutairu, Mr W.A. Idowu, urged the court to grant him bail.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Olusola Aluko, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said the sureties should reside within the court's jurisdiction and also provide three years tax clearance as part of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to Dec. 12 for mention. (NAN)

TARABA STATE SPEAKER IS DEAD

The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa died at age 47years of an undisclosed ailment on Monday morning, at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo.

Tsokwa reportedly took ill last Thursday and was rushed to the hospital.

The late Speaker, who was a staunch supporter of the acting state governor, Garuba Umar, in the on-going battle for the state, escaped death on the 19th of September following an ambush by unknown gunmen, along the Jos-Abuja road.

Although he escaped the ambush unhurt, some of the policemen traveling with him sustained gunshot wounds.

He attended Federal University of Technology, Yola.

ASUU STRIKE UPDATE!

The end to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU, might not be in view yet, as the union has rejected the offer of N200 billion by the Federal Government.

The government had earlier offered N130billion to the protesting lecturers in order to resolve the impasse; the offer was also increased to N150 billion, all of which ASUU rejected, insisting that government must implement the 2009 agreement.The union asserted that going by the 2009 agreement, government is supposed to have injected N500 billion by the end of 2013, with another N500 billion by 2014.Nassarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) branch chairman of the Union, Dr. Thephilus Lagithe stated that the actual amount in the 2009 agreement was N1.3 trillion to be paid over a period of four years.

He said, "Recently, they called us and said instead of the 100 billion, we are giving you N150 and recently they said from that 150 billion, they are going to make it 200 billion. But these are just promises.Speaking further, he said, "last year, they were supposed to inject N100 billion and this year N400 billion. Then next year, N500 billion. But from all indication, the government is not even serious about injecting money into the education sector.It said the N100 billion which the government had earlier promised to give the union was supposed to have been paid in 2012. It said if the strike continues to 2014, the money will then rise to N900 billion.

EFCC arraigns teenage boy for duping American of $40million over the internet(pictured)

Suspected teenage Internet fraudster, Tobechukwu Igbokwe, and his accomplice, Ifeanyi Obi have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for allegedly defrauding an American of $40 million.

19-year-old Igbokwe and Obi have been held at the Kirikiri prisons since they were caught after a gig went burst.

Nigerian Eye reports that the American victim, Michael Silva had wired the total sum of $40 million to the boys in Nigerian believing them when they told him that they had a huge inheritance that they wanted to move to a foreign account for safekeeping.

Silva was asked to send money to "process" the transfer and he did so in instalments through Western Union Transfer.

Igbokwe and Obi have now been charged on 12-counts bordering on forgery, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Sections 8(a) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

Appearing before Justice Lawal of a Lagos State High Court, Ikeja was alleged to have duped many other people, many of them foreigners he connected with through the internet under fraudulent guises among them a Tommy Bedwell, who lost $6,000 to him and Richard Hunt, $15,000.

According to reports, one of the charges against Igbokwe and Obi read: "Tobechukwu Igbokwe (alias David Prince, alias John Emma, sometimes in the month of October 2011 in Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, with intent to defraud, obtained $800, $700, $200, $400, $200, $300, $500, $500, $500, $200 (totalling $5,500).

"Which sum you obtained separately from Michael Silva of the United States of America under false pretence that the money represent part payment for processing inheritance funds due him as
a beneficiary of the fund and which pretence you knew was false."

The case was adjourned for further hearing on December 3.

Marketers ban Mercy johnson for being too expensive

Nollwood marketers have banned actress Mercy Johnson Okojie for being too expensive. Doesn't make sense does it? If someone's fees is too high, the sensible thing to do would be to boycott them and use less expensive actresses. Leave her to those who can afford her.
Mercy Johnson is currently the highest paid actress in Nollywood. She charges between N1.8million to N2m to feature in a movie. The others, like Ini Edo and Funke Akindele charge between N700k to N1.2million.For this reason, the actress has been blacklisted by the Nollywood Movie Marketers Association. The ban will not take effect immediately as Mercy has already signed up to do quite a number of movies. She returned on Thursday from a movie location, and will be on the set of another movie from tomorrow, Sunday.

She will be traveling out of Nigeria sometime this month and when she returns, will be on another movie set…so she's basically booked till the end of the year.

The idea now is not to ban her after all her current contracts end. So the ban won't take effect until at least January 2014. This is not the first time the movie marketers association will be placing a ban on actors. They did this a few years ago when quite a number of Nollywood actors including Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Noah, RMD, Emeka Ike, Jim Iyke and others were blacklisted.
